Continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) overcomes some of the limitations of SMBG and provides a continuum of glucose data. The drawbacks of SMBG are well-known and include pain, inconvenience, sleep disturbance for nighttime tests, and embarrassment. For these patients, four or more daily blood glucose (BG) tests are recommended to safely and effectively adjust insulin doses ( 2). Self-monitoring of blood glucose (SMBG) is the standard of care for patients with type 2 diabetes treated with multiple daily insulin injections (MDI) ( 1).
